Facilities Management Energy Saving Strategies

Facility Management's Information Systems staff has established the following energy-saving strategies for our department. Some steps can be taken by the individual user; some by the IS department, and some through our equipment purchase and replacement strategies.

Conservation for computers—by the individual:

  • Turn off your computer every night. This will cut its energy consumption by more than 60%. Plus, restarting it each morning allows it to 'clean up', alleviating a number of operating problems. (Note: servers are excluded!)
  • Turn off your monitor if you plan to be out of the office for more than an hour. Each monitor's energy consumption would be cut by more than 10% if we did this at lunch, alone.
  • Conservation for computers—by the IS staff:

  • New Windows 2000 systems will have the monitor 'sleep' mode enabled before deployment. This means your monitor will appear to go blank after a certain time without activity. It can be easily 'awakened' by moving your mouse or hitting a key on the keyboard.
  • Windows 2000 systems already deployed should have 'sleep' mode>already enabled. If you don't think sleep mode is enabled please contact IS staff.
  • Old Windows NT systems do not have a 'sleep' mode. These systems will be replaced during the normal renewal/replacement process which isbasically a continuous process.
  • Conservation for computers—by hardware/software purchase and replacement:

  • New systems will include flat-panel monitors, which consume up to 70% less energy when in use than the old CRT's do.
  • New systems will use Windows 2000 as an operating system.
