Campus Earth Summit (2002)

Barb Laurenson Biography

Barb Laurenson is a Senior Associate with Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates in San Francisco, CA.  Barb served as Project Manager on the Missoula in Motion Transportation Demand Management Strategy Evaluation Study and was a senior planner on the Southside/Downtown Berkeley Transportation Demand Management Study.  This Study recommended parking, transit, bicycling, and policy strategies, several of which were implemented within one year of the study's conclusion.  Ms. Laurenson is also developing TDM Plans for two development projects (4.5 million square feet) at the NASA Ames Research Center with the intent of reducing trips 40% beyond the average countywide mode share.

She has also worked with several universities to assess their investments in parking and transportation.  She developed a comprehensive parking pricing model for Colorado State University that included parking construction costs, financing, TDM program costs, and various funding scenarios.  At the University of California, San Diego Barb weighed the costs of parking construction against transportation demand management strategies and developed parking and TDM strategies to meet future campus growth.

Before joining Nelson\Nygaard, Barb was the California Division Manager for Transportation Systems Management at Kaiser Permanente.  At Kaiser for six years, Barb developed award-winning transportation programs for 32 facilities, such as parking management, shuttles, employee subsidies, Commuter Choice, and partial parking cash-out.  She tailored programs to sites with both large and small TDM budgets, and worked aggressively to build support for TDM within the company.

Barb is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and received her Master's of Urban Planning from San Jose State University.
