George Bandy II Biography

George Bandy II currently serves as the Social Sustainability Manager at Interface Research Inc. In this capacity he is continuously looking at Interface, Inc. and its impact on social performance along the path of sustainability. Social performance is a key ingredient in assuring our commitment and support of our ability to deliver high-quality environmental and economic performance. By reporting and improving social performance we will enhance our reputation, increase stakeholder trust, create vast business opportunities, improve worker productivity, and lower operational costs. He serves a strategic team, designed to develop, support and implement Social Sustainability strategies and initiatives.

Interface Inc. is an integrated flooring manufacturer with facilities worldwide. The company has started on a "mid-course correction" to transform itself into a sustainable corporation and eventually a restorative corporation. The company strives to manage human and natural capital as efficiently as financial capital. It has laid out a vision and a path to sustainability through the seven steps of the Interface Model: Zero Wastes, Benign Emissions, Renewable Energy Use, Closing the loop of industrial and natural systems, Resource Efficient Transportation and Delivery, Sensitivity Hook-up for Awareness and Connecting, and Re-design of Commerce. The company envisions that a prototypical company of the 21 (superscript: st) Century is to be "strongly service oriented, resource-efficient, wasting nothing, solar-driven, cyclical (not linear), and strongly connected with employees, communities, customers and our suppliers. The company is to grow, "not at Earth's expense nor at our descendants' expense, but at the expense of inefficient competitors."

Mr. Bandy is the former Sustainable Development Officer for the University of Texas-Houston. This position was housed under the Office of Facilities Planning and Development where his role was to educate develop and support the University in facility operations, construction, development and business practices that were healthy and demonstrated minimum negative repercussions on social, economic and environmental issues in their use or application. These practices had to also be efficient in their consumption of energy and natural resources.

George has served on many teams of architects, designers, engineers, material specialists and strategists, his efforts helped plan the Nursing School Biomedical Sciences Building at the University. This building is on target to be the largest sustainability planned educational facility in the south. This facility that is currently being constructed is on schedule to meet the LEED's objectives at the platinum or gold level.

While serving in these two capacities, George has been appointed to the USGBC (Atlanta Chapter) Vice Chairman, Higher Education Network for Sustainability and the Environment Steering Committee, Atlanta Chamber of Commerce Environmental Committee and many other groups use him as a resource such as The Natural Step, Second Nature, EPA etc. George has had the privilege of "sharing his journey and his vision" at over 40 universities, State of Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission, The Natural Step, Second Nature, IFMA, Alabama State House of Representatives, City of Houston, City of Birmingham, City of Charlotte, and other local, national and international events.
